Michigan CPL Training: Requirements, Expert Tips & How to Choose the Best Class

Writer: Ian MurphyIan Murphy

Considering a concealed pistol license (CPL) in Michigan? It’s crucial to understand the training requirements that come with it. Laws and regulations can feel daunting, but this guide simplifies the essentials for potential CPL holders, ensuring you have the clarity needed to carry responsibly.

What is a CPL?

A concealed pistol license (CPL) permits Michigan residents to carry a concealed firearm in public. It's essential to remember that with this privilege comes responsibility. Before applying, applicants must meet specific training requirements set by the state of Michigan.

Training Requirements for CPL

Certification of Training

To obtain a CPL in Michigan, you must complete a state-approved training course. This training should be led by an instructor certified to teach CPL classes. At Wayne County Firearms we offer one day CPL classes for $79. If you would like to see our class schedule please click here.

The training spans at least eight hours which is required by Michigan Law. The class combines classroom instruction with hands-on shooting practice. This balanced approach ensures candidates gain the essential knowledge and skills needed to handle a firearm safely.

Course Content

The training course covers critical topics in firearm safety and handling, including:

  • Safe storage and handling of firearms

  • Legal considerations when carrying a concealed weapon

  • An overview of Michigan's firearm laws

  • Techniques for de-escalating conflicts

At the end of the course, candidates participate in practical training to safely operate and fire handguns. This not only reinforces their understanding of the laws but also builds their confidence in responsibly handling a firearm. If you have never shot a firearm don't be nervous, many students have never handled a firearm prior to taking a course.

Live Fire Exercise

A key aspect of CPL training is the live-fire exercise. Here, candidates must demonstrate a basic proficiency and safety.

Participants are required to shoot a minimum of 30 rounds, usually 50 rounds, at distances ranging from 3 to 7 yards. This practical component is crucial as it simulates real-world scenarios, helping you become familiar with the firearm's operation under pressure.

Documentation of Training

Once you complete the training course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from your instructor. This certificate is a crucial part of the CPL application process and must be verified by the County Clerks office in order for your application to be processed.

Choosing the Right Training Course

Researching Instructors

Selecting the right course begins with researching the qualifications of your instructor. Choose certified trainers with positive reputations and experience in teaching CPL courses.

CPL class sizes can vary significantly depending on the instructor. Some classes have as many as 50 students, making it difficult for instructors to answer individual questions and provide the personal attention each student deserves. Large class sizes also lead to long wait times at the shooting range, often extending the class well beyond the scheduled time.

At Wayne County Firearms Training, we cap our classes at just 18 students. This smaller class size ensures personalized instruction, allows for more engagement, and keeps the class on schedule—so you get the best training experience without unnecessary delays.

Checking reviews from previous students can provide valuable insight into the course's quality. For example, look for instructors who receive high praise for their teaching methods and engagement levels. Click here to view our google reviews.

Applying for a CPL

Completing the Application

After finishing your CPL training, the next step is to fill out the CPL application. Applications are available at your local county clerk’s office or the Michigan State Police website.

Your application will require personal details such as your name, address, date of birth, and basic questions regarding your criminal history and suitability to qualify for a CPL.

Fees and Fingerprinting

When submitting your application, be prepared to pay the required fee of $115. Fingerprinting is also mandatory and needed for background checks.

You will need to get fingerprinted as a requirement for your CPL application. Some Clerks offices will do that on site and some may refer you to the Sheriffs office for this.

You will NOT need to provide a passport photo as required in the past, whatever photo is on file with the Secretary of State will be used for your CPL.

Waiting Period

Once submitted, the Clerks office has 45 days to process your application. The actual time it takes for you to receive your CPL in the mail can vary from county to county but usually takes a few weeks. If you do not receive your CPL within 45 days, your receipt for your application costs becomes your permit to carry. We recommend reaching out to your Clerks office immediately if you do not receive any correspondence from them within the allotted time.

Final Thoughts

Understanding Michigan's CPL training requirements is essential for anyone wishing to carry a concealed weapon legally. By following the necessary training protocols and application steps, individuals can navigate firearm laws with confidence.

Building a strong foundation in firearm safety, legality, and responsibility prepares applicants for successful licensing. More importantly, it ensures they are conscientious and capable when carrying concealed weapons.
